Ten years on from Extreme Conditions and we are back on E. D. N. III, in a new third person shooter. The icy wasteland of a decade previous has been stripped away to reveal a more temperate but nonetheless hostile landscape. This change in scenery has done nothing to deter the Akrid who have instead become stronger, expanding their armies and posing a far more robust threat than before.
At first glance the fact that this high profile title, with its excellent production values, has dropped to less than £20 in price already seems too good to be true but a closer look reveals why the price has been sliding faster than an oiled eel on a helter skelter. While there's plenty of variety to be found in the game and the online and competitive modes have a lot to offer, Lost Planet 2 still feels like something of an insidious nest of horrid little flaws. For a start the AI, both friendly and enemy, is abominable and fist-gnawingly frustrating. This, in conjunction with some woeful mission design and a host of other issues makes the game anything but fun in a single player context.
Thankfully, the multiplayer content adds a lot of value to the game and may just be enough to make it worth a punt at this bargain price, particularly if you like the idea of a free opportunity to advertise a shoddy game on your chest.
