Paradox Interactive have announced a new entry in the Magicka series, built around 4-on-4 PvP. Magicka: Wizard Wars promises to "destroy old friendships in new ways" - details and quirky live action trailer below.
Magicka: Wizard Wars is the first title from newly formed studio Paradox North, which comprises several veterans from Stockholm-based studios (both AAA and indie). As you'd expect from a Magicka title, it's going to be heavy on outrageous combinations of elemental spells and pop culture references, but focused solely on team-based multiplayer shenanigans.
“Magicka has always allowed for some unique gameplay and, with Wizard Wars, we’ve really captured the true experience of PvP wizardry", explained Paradox North VP John Hargelid. "When you put the team-focused, hardcore competition of online games together with characters whose attacks are fluid and dynamic – and then give teammates the ability to implode, freeze, and fling each other by accident – it’s really something special to watch, and to play, and to yell at your friends about afterwards.”
Two teams of four wizards each will brawl for magical domination using a plethora of spells, both destructive and tactical, which can be combined to deliver unique effects. Maximising firepower while avoiding friendly fire will be the aim of the game, with short matches promising a fairly breezy experience.
Paradox are targeting a "winter" PC release, and we'll likely receive more details over the coming weeks.
