Magna Carta: The Phantom of Avalanche was a Windows only release in 2001, that was followed up by PS2 game Magna Carta: Crimson Stigmata in 2004 so it was a little strange to see "Magna Carta 2" come out on the XBox 360 last year. Its mediocre gameplay was slightly less surprising.
If you are a fan of the series or just fancy a good looking but disappointing rpg and cannot wait for Final Fantasy XIII then you will be pleased to hear that Shop To are selling Magna Carta 2 for the comparatively low price of £19.85. Buying from Shop To will save you a fiver from the next best price of £24.98 from Gamestation.
The story is both clichéd and uninspiring. Set in a land torn apart by civil war following the assassination of the queen of Lanzheim at the hands of the kingdom's evil Prime Minister, it tells of young amnesiac Juto who meets up with the kingdom's rightful ruler, Princess Rzephillda Grena Berlinette, Zephie, who heads an elite combat unit in hope of reclaiming her throne. It's all rather bland and forgettable.
Thankfully the game's real time combat system is fast and fun and there is a decent variety of quests on offer. The visual design is rather good with well textured and detailed backgrounds and a distinctive overall look but a dodgy camera can cause confusion and frustration. If you want to tackle all of Magna Carta 2's side quests then there's a good 40+ hours of play over the two discs but after a full playthrough, it's very unlikely that you'll be going back for more.
