MAILBAG: Ask us direct questions here!

MattGardner |  Aug. 9, 2012 at 10:16

WE NEED YOU! We're going to be running an overall Why We Love Gaming podcast for our 25th, talking about gaming inspirations, wow moments and also disappointments, but we want you guys to be able to ask us direct questions - whether they're about things we've written, games, news, opinions on developers, publishers, horrible UI updates, whatever...just let us know.

If this is successful, we'll run it each week for the podcast.

Any chance of a return of the "XBL Indie Game of the week" Jon used to do?
I like the indie games, but thanks to a combination of them being slightly hidden away and the good games being lost amongst the crap I liked that someone would do the legwork (and take some of the financial burden) by sorting the wheat from the chaff.

@Late: We didn't really get enough direct questions to do a proper mailbag section this week, so I'll answer your question here.

Short answer: maybe - but probably with a change of format.

Long, needlessly involved answer:

I'd like to quickly explain why I put the column on hiatus (to get it off my chest) - partly, it comes down to time. You might have noticed that our effective team strength has gone from 6 to 3 - and with the bulletin news/increased content and article output, something had to give. That said, I also took the decision to massively increase our overall indie coverage (news, interviews and reviews), mainly focusing on the PC side of things. I therefore decided to put the column on hold until I could commit to running it on a weekly basis again.

So, right, to actually answer the question: I'd love to bring XBLIGotW back, or at least get back up to speed on XBLIG reviews. However, I'm wondering whether it might be worth changing the format - perhaps a roundup (with descriptions and links) to every XBLIG game to release in a given week, or a monthly best of. I might also just start giving the best XBLIG games full front-page reviews alongside everything else and stop separating them from the rest of the market.

Any feedback would be welcome!

Full reviews for all games wouldn't be workable - it'd almost be a full time job on it's own. And a one word review would cover most of the games, to be honest.

I used to buy maybe 3 games a week from the Indie Marketplace before your regular column. That went up to maybe 4 games a week, and was accompanied by a marked increase in quality. Lately, though, I often go weeks without buying a single game. Half the time that's because I kind of forget the indie scene is there entirely.

If staff and time constraints are a concern I wonder if there's some facility to have regulars do something? Dunno how it'd work or if it'd be possible.

I wouldn't look to run full reviews for all games, just those I consider to be the best in class, and worthy of being marked on our mainstream scoring system. We've got that lovely banner, though, I'd really like to bring XBLIGotW back at some point.

What I might do in the interim is start running some discussion threads and putting games worth checking out on there - that way, regulars (i.e. you :p ) could also get involved?

We are looking into the possibility of op-ed guest pieces or columns and associate reviewers. There'll be more on that post-Gamescom, particularly as we approach silly season.

One of the things I'd love to do would be to arrange a weekly Community Corner column that would allow regulars to get particular topics off of their chests - industry peeves, gaming loves, development woes, publisher deviousness, or specific personal anecdotes, gaming achievements etc. But that would be dependent on interest.

We can always do that sort of thing by promoting reader-made discussions to the front page, too!

Always happy to chip in with my opinions of a few games.

Never listened before ep 25, and am glad that I finally have. Are you all Xbox 360 gamers, though? PC gets some love, but doesn't seem like you have much time for the PS3? I think you should give that good news game another try though. I bet the outtakes were hilarious!
