Mario Kart 8 overdrives Wii U sales by a devilish 666%

Remember To Claim Your Free Game!

We're not making this up. Perhaps Nintendo made a bargain with a mysterious stranger down at the crossroads, because Mario Kart 8 has the number of the boost. Boosted hardware sales percentages, that is.

The latest figures from GFK Chart-Track reveal the extraordinary percentage: a 666% weekly jump in Wii U hardware sales, 82% of which were the Mario Kart 8 bundle. It's clear that a big franchise and some actual marketing have finally paid off, since Nintendo has been waiting for a true system seller to arrive over these last few years. And look, it's selling systems.

It will need to be the first step in an emphatic summer to keep the momentum going, but frankly I'm just chuffed to be able to talk about great Wii U games and strong Wii U sales in the same article. Makes for a nice change of pace, even if Nintendo may have consorted with dark forces to get ahead.

Also, remember that you've got a limited time to claim and register for your free game download! You'll have to register the PIN code (included in the box or system menu for digital copies) with your Club Nintendo account before July 31st, then choose your game before the end of August.

Don't panic: you can find step-by-step instructions and more details here.

Got any sales numbers?
The percentages make for impressive headlines, but a 666% increase could just mean they sold 3 consoles last week and 23 this week.
