Mass Effect is no stranger to transmedia, what with the novels, graphic novels and the occasional Hollywood rumour we've seen in the past few years, and now a straight-to-video anime feature is set to land next year.
Co-produced by Tokyo-based anime and international feature film production company T.O Entertainment and Dragon Age anime producers FUNimation (due for release this year), EA's official release states that 'the anime video will tell the tale of an epic science fiction adventure set in a vast universe filled with dangerous alien life and mysterious, uncharted planets.'
Casey Hudson, BioWare's executive producer for the Mass Effect series will be serving as an executive producer on this project too.
'Over the last few years, we have revealed different pieces of the Mass Effect world through different media. Extending the story through an anime medium is another amazing opportunity for us,' said Hudson
'Partnering with FUNimation ensures that we will bring this rich universe to life with the utmost quality and the same attention to detail that the Mass Effect games are known for.'
Following THQ's announcement earlier this week, it would seem that transmedia is the order of the day, with successful IP spawning plenty of spin-offs, action figures, and clothes. I myself have an N7 hoodie. Yes, it was an impulse buy. No I don't feel guilty.
The feature is set for a summer release on digital and home video platforms in the summer next year. [EA]
