Media Molecule, the UK outfit forged from former Lionhead devs, is perhaps the biggest success story of this generation. Their genre-defining first title, LittleBigPlanet, was a runaway success, it's Play, Create, Share mantra picked up by a swathe of would-be competitors. They followed up with a solid sequel, and Sony continues to greenlight further LPB projects across PS3, Move and their Vita handheld. However, MM has distanced themselves from the LittleBigPlanet franchise to instead work on "new ideas"
Direct from the 2011 Gamelab conference in Barcelona, Edge Online's Twitter broke the news, presumably from an interview or speech from Media Molecule. "We're stepping away from Little Big Planet to focus on some new ideas," explains Media Molecule's studio director, Siobhan Reddy. It isn't particularly surprising news; Sony confirmed this week that fellow UK outfit, Double11, set up by former Rockstar engineers, would be handling the PS Vita version of Little Big Planet.
We can only hope Sony facilitate Media Molecule's next project with as much support as they invested in their Little Big Planet venture. MM have a ridiculously talented array of staff, and we can only wonder what they'll come up with. [Twitter]
