THQ have been marketing Metro 2033 pretty aggressively of late, with the apocalyptic FPS only a few days away now. Interested gamers and fans of the genre will be pleased to now that you can pre-order the PC version for just £21.49 from Coolshop at the moment, which is around £1.50 than CDWow who have a 13% off sale on today, and a good £3.50 cheaper than usual nearest competitor Gamestation.
The setting is a not-too-distant future which has seen the Earth ravaged by a radioactive disaster of apocalyptic proportions. A small band of survivors, taking refuge in the Moscow subway system, have managed to live on, yielding a generation of subterranean dwellers afraid of the poisonous air outside and the threat of the mutated life forms that have now called the planet's surface home.
Playing as Metro-raised Artyom, you are eventually tasked with travelling to the heart of the Metro system, venturing beyond your own city limits to bring a message of warning to the other underground cities. The FPS action has been tweaked to provide for maximum narrative immersion with no HUD and an emphasis on NPC interaction.
I'm pretty excited for Metro 2033 as the preview coverage and one or two reviews that have trickled through all suggest a game with a palpable tone and atmosphere, fuelled by a strong plot and excellent pacing. Definitely one to watch.
