Microsoft To Merge Xbox.com & Games For Windows

We don't pay a huge amount of attention to Games For Windows Live, which is mainly due to its terrible deals, nasty client and pitiful games selection compared to the likes of Steam and... well... pretty much everyone else. However, GFWL is now in the news thanks to a surprise merger with Xbox.com; meaning that the two marketplaces will integrate into one central hub for Xbox Live Arcade, Xbox Live Games On Demand and Achievement-enabled PC titles. The transition is set for July 11th, and the announcement is still available on the official site.

"Games for Windows Marketplace will fully transition over to Xbox.com. Now you can get all of your gaming needs in one place. It’s convenient, it’s concentrated, and it’s a whole lot of great games."

At this stage, it is unclear whether anyone will care. Or notice.

only going to be interesting if games ive bought on my xbox are playable on my pc, and vice versa, ala Portal 2 on ps3 via steam.

I wouldn't hold your breath. :3 X360 cloud saving is happening, but I still don't know if they have the will or infrastructure to make cross-platform play viable.

At this stage, Steam are so far ahead of the competition (any competition, in fact) that this latest Microsoft move may just be a way of getting GFWL out of the limelight and into the safe realms of obscurity. On the other hand, it may be a first step towards rejuvenating the service. We can't wait to see which.
