Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has suggested that the Games for Gold scheme -- which kicked off with Defense Grid this month -- might run beyond the initial season that ends on December 31st, depending on how things go. He also apologised on behalf of Microsoft for once again confusing everybody (they're making a habit of that) who was expecting to receive Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed II as part of the service. "Anything is possible," sai Hryb, responding to a comment on Reddit about Games With Gold extending beyond the end of this year. "We'll see how the program goes." As for this month's free games, well, Hryb apologised for the "disappointment," saying that he had no idea where on earth people had thought Microsoft might be giving away two really old retail games . "Sorry about the disappointment. Not sure how people started to assume that H3 and AC2 were coming in July. I thought it was pretty clear in the briefing, but I guess not that clear :(" Maybe, Larry, just maybe we got it from something likes this:

This should have been nice and straightforward, but quite how Microsoft have managed to taint a good thing with bad once again is almost impressive.

I'd always been working under the understanding that AC3 and Halo 3 were going to be "at some point" (probably quite late on in the offer).

Absolutely loved Defense Grid when I played it on the PC but it does come as a bit of disappointment after Fable 3. Perhaps it will be one indie game and one AAA each month.

They just can't seem to do anything right at the moment.
