Minecraft has launched as a timed exclusive for Xperia Play handsets, and costs $6.99. Much like its PC brethren, this first release will be in its Alpha infancy, with Mojang (who are developing the port in-house) tweaking the title as they go. The game supports local wireless multiplayer and will display most (but not all) of the construction-based features found in Notch's PC block-building behemoth.
The developer released a statement explaining their intentions for additional content and patches.
Just like the PC/Mac/Linux version of Minecraft we’re planning to continue developing the Pocket Edition for a long time with frequent updates. We are eager to hear what the Minecraft community thinks about our new game and what you all want to see in future updates.
To coincide with the launch, a limited edition Minecraft Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (pictured above) is now available on Ebay for a - *ahem* - reasonable price, but will also be available as a prize at this year's Gamescom. Can't say I'm sold on the design, but considering Minecraft could be described as anything but pretty, they didn't have a lot to work with. [Develop]
