Whether or not you have a problem with the way Activision go about their business, there's no denying that in Modern Warfare 2 they produced a pretty damn good FPS. Even now that some of the hype has died down, I think only the most blinkered of antagonists could argue that it wasn't a good game. A little on the short side? Yes. Big, dumb and loud? Almost certainly. Game of the year? Highly debatable. But packed full of entertainment? Absolutely!
Play have just dropped the price on the Xbox 360 version of the game to £24.99, undercutting second-place Gamestation and Amazon by £3. The last time this happened, it really didn't stick around for very long so get your skates on!
Flipping between the tales of a US Ranger defending his homeland and a crack team of gravelly voiced ex-SAS types trying to figure out what the hell is going on, Modern Warfare 2 picks up from the end of it's predecessor's narrative to weave a story of global political terrorism writ large. Makarov's back and busy duping the superpowers into starting World War III.
The story is all Hollywood style with little substance and the game can be accused of taking itself far too seriously at times, but in reality Modern Warfare 2 reveals itself as a hilariously farfetched action-packed rollercoaster of a shooter. It has been criticised for linearity but (WARNING: Veiled Final Fantasy XIII dig incoming) unlike certain games that seek to hold you at arm's length, here you're never anything less than totally immersed in the action. And, boy, there's a lot of action. This game revels in spectacle and setpieces, constructing epic firefights and dramatic sequences at the drop of a hat.
The short-but-seriously-sweet singleplayer is fleshed out by a co-op mode in Special Ops that proves to be a hoot with a mate, and then there's the fantastic RPGish multiplayer which rewards effort of all kind and isn't too punitive about distributing experience points for delicious rewards either.
If you have the game already and have made up your mind either way as to its merits and faults then fine, but if you're an FPS fan yet to invest or, worse, one of those people playa-hatin' for the sake of it then I really encourage you use this lower price to actually give it a whirl. You might even have some fun.
