Big, brash and barnstorming fun, Modern Warfare 2 is back down below the £30 mark again thanks, this time, to GAME. The purple purveyor of pixellated products is stocking Activision and Infinity Ward's FPS blockbuster for £27.98 for both the PS3 and X360 versions, saving you at least fiver on the closest competition for each (ShopTo & Simply Games respectively). Flitting between the boots of an US Army Ranger defending homesoil against invasion and a bunch of hard-as-nails SAS types led by the permanently gruff Kevin McKidd, with the odd censor-baiting undercover bit thrown in for good measure, Modern Warfare 2 boasts some of the finest action setpieces, tight Hollywood-esque scripting and ludicrous plotting ever committed to disc or cartridge.
The game itself is a resolutely linear affair, but this isn't an RPG, and you expect nothing less than for Infinity Ward to take you on a roller coaster ride of bullets, bangs and boomsticks...which is exactly what they do. Now that the feverish hype has all but completely subsided (the Wempella court-case aside), it's time to appraise the game on its own merits, and the only thing you really need to know is that this is a frankly brilliant first person shooter. Tight, nervous and tactical, the single player might be a bit on the short side but there's plenty to keep you entertained, and the co-op Special Ops levels make for brilliant fun with a mate.
Take the game online and suddenly everything clicks into place, with performance based ranking systems and experience points, to be spent later on better weaponry, armour and abilities. Don't be fooled by the haters who were put off by the aggressive, and at times arrogant, marketing strategy for this game: Modern Warfare 2 is an excellent game and definitely deserves a place any FPS fan's collection.
