Activision's nonchalance towards the recent Modern Warfare 3 leaks appears to have been well-judged. Already, pre-order numbers for the eighth entry in the blockbuster franchise has exceeded figures recorded by Black Ops at a similar time. The latter shattered sales records when it released in November of last year, and it appears Infinity Ward - and Sledgehammer's - follow-up is set to continue the record-breaking tradition.
"Last year, Call of Duty: Black Ops became the most pre-ordered title in our history," reveals Bob McKenzie, senior vice-president of marketing at US retailer, Gamestop. "Already, this year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is significantly ahead of that pace. Our customers’ response to the reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been amazing".
You often hear publishers bigging up their pre-order figures; so it's far more impressive when you hear it come straight from the mouth of an actual retailer. That said, while Gamestop might be reporting record figures, whether that applies to other outlets, let alone the rest of the global market, remains to be seen.
Regardless, Modern Warfare 3 will almost certainly shift millions, if not a record amount. It'll probably pop up at this week's E3 2011 conference, too. [Gamestop]
