Imagine if LittleBigPlanet and Mario Kart got fused together in a weird freak lightning accident and the result would probably look a lot like ModNation Racers. Subscribing to LBP's Play-Create-Share mantra, this is another fantastic little exclusive for the PS3 that marries superb gameplay with a deep yet accessible user-generated content system to allow for near endless replayability.
Considering that it's one of the best games on the PS3, it's unsurprising that the price is taking a little while to come down. That said, Coolshop have just dropped theirs to £25.99, almost £4 cheaper than the nearest competitor over at Simply Games.
Expect to howl at the screen in frustration at the cheating AI, Mario Kart has nothing on this in that department, but really this is a game to be played with friends. Round up some mates and the the cutesy cartoon racing fun hits is peak as you scramble around the tracks, desperately trying to stockpile awesome weapons to make your break for first place or defend the slim lead you've attained.
The big draw of the game is obviously the track creation system and it proves to be phenomenally easy to get to grips with. Additionally, if you get stuck you can just ask the system to finish it off for you before going back and tweaking to your heart's desire. In effect, you can paint onto a blank canvas and start from scratch or modify existing works, the choice is yours.
The loading times can be a pain but really ModNation Racers is a stonkingly good game: accessible, fun and, thanks to the burgeoning online community, endlessly surprising.
