Mortal Kombat has always kicked up a fuss due to the ridiculous and completely over the top violence that it contains, not to mention the gore and blood factor involved, which is always at its best during a fantastic fatality or two, but this time it looks like the developers have gone a bit too far for the Australian Classification Board who have decided to turn it down for a rating.
Earlier today Warner Bros. Interactive released a statement about the current situation:
The highly anticipated video game Mortal Kombat, published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE) in Australia, has been refused classification by the Australian Classification Board and will not release in Australia. We are extremely disappointed that Mortal Kombat, one of the world's oldest and most successful video games franchises, will not be available to mature Australian gamers.
WBIE would not market mature content where it is not appropriate for the audience. We understand that not all content is for every audience, but there is an audience for mature gaming content and it would make more sense to have the R18+ classification in Australia. As a member of the iGEA, WBIE is reviewing all options available at this time.
I can't help but feel a little bit sorry for the people of Australia, because the upshot of this is that many of them have probably had their pre-orders set up for a while and have been excitedly waiting for the game's release in approximately a months time, only to have had it snatched away at the last minute with a swift cancellation of all existing pre-orders! Also, it looks like any sort of recognition of the game's existence has also become the enemy, seeing as a number of shops have been asked to remove any advertising that they currently have for the game.
On a personal level though, I now can't help but get a little more excited about this instalment's release, because it looks like this is going to be a completely unrestricted Mortal Kombat title and that is a very, very good thing in my opinion. Lets just hope that other classifications boards don't decide to follow suit! If you want to see what to expect from the game then why not check out our Mortal Kombat Preview. [PlayStation LifeStyle]
