With Empire: Total War rounding off around 1799 – the very year Napoleon installed himself as first consul of France after leading a successful coup d’état – creating a standalone sequel which allows you to step into the shoes of the crazed little dictator himself was the obvious progression for the TW series. Now pre-order deals for Napoleon: Total War - out 26th February – are currently going for just £16.95 on Zavvi.
According to the previews it’s more a case of evolution rather than revolution in this standalone expansion. Although N: TW sees the Empire: Total War graphics engine remain, it has undergone some welcome refinements.
With Medieval II having done much to improve the identical appearance of units from Rome, with soldiers that were more individualized and inconsistent, it was a shame to see the clone armies returning for E: TW. However, the Napoleon edition will apply some 64 different faces to your massed ranks, and even depict soldiers varying in height. It will also include battles realistically obscured by banks for smoke which grow ever more impenetrable after each volley of musket and cannon fire.
Naval battles return of course whilst having also undergone a few tweaks. One of the best has to be the fact that when one of your ships is crippled by cannon fire, with broken masts and gashes across the hull, the crew will abandon their posts to begin shoring and making repairs. Although probably the best part of N: TW however is the fact you’ll be able to relive all Napoleon’s famous campaigns from any perspective, with complete autonomy to alter the course of history.
