Players launched an earnest, organised and truly formidable campaign to save City Of Heroes after NCsoft announced plans to close the venerable MMO this November. Despite managing to secure over 200,000 petition signatures, funding drives and even celebrity endorsements, a new statement from NCsoft all but dashes their hopes of rescuing their favourite virtual home.
NCsoft's statement, made directly to the player base, acknowledges their efforts but firmly states that City Of Heroes will still be closing on November 30th.
“We wanted to let you know that your voices have been heard and your concerns have been taken into serious consideration. We appreciate the overwhelmingly constructive and positive messages in the emails, notes, and packages you’ve sent in support of the game."
“It has not been an easy decision for us to close Paragon Studios and prepare to shut down City of Heroes. We’ve exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property, but in the end, efforts to do so were not successful. City of Heroes has a special place in all of our hearts, and we want to ensure its reputation and the memories we share for the game end on a high note.”
We've reached out to the Save Paragon City campaign for a response. Barring an eleventh-hour turnaround, it seems that their hard work and dedication may have been in vain - and we wish everyone involved the very best.
