As fans from 4chan's /v/ board descended upon Valve HQ for Gabe Newell's birthday, the Valve guru revealed that the company's hard at work on a full follow-up to the Source engine for "next-gen", also confirming that Ricochet 2 is in development.

Newell began proceedings with a nice little fan-joke that saw Valve's bearded mastermind hand over $2.50 to unlock his present of a real-life Mann Co. crate, inside which was a dinky TF2 Soldier hat. He then took part in a little Q&A, during which questions about HL3 were warned against.

"We've been working on new engine stuff for a while," when asked about a follow-up to the Source engine. "We've just been waiting for a game to roll it out with."

This was closely followed by a request for clarification from  the crowd: "Is it more than just an extension to Source? Like, is it an entirely new engine?"

"Yeah," Newell replied.

Newell also confirmed that there'll be a sequel to Ricochet - the official Half-Life mod that was a little like a cross between dodgeball, Ultimate Frisbee, and Tron. [via Joystiq]

Worth noting that "Ricochet 2" is usually Valve-speak for "Half Life 3"... ;)
