Black Ops' Lag, Douchebags & Free Female Avatar Gear

From Lags And Douchebags To The Rumour Overload - News Roundup 10th November 2010

Call of Duty: Black Ops finally launched yesterday to rave reviews- but the coverage hasn't stopped yet. Several reports indicate that the PC version frequently suffers from mysterious crippling bouts of lag, even during singleplayer cutscenes. There are plenty of fixes, tweaks and suggestions doing the rounds at the moment, but the current consensus is that it's having real trouble with multiple-core processors. Something to watch out for.

Secondly, Treyarch has responded to the glitchers and hackers who are already starting to ply their pathetic trade on the servers.

We are disinterested in making mini-celebrities out of douche-bags. You better think twice before you glitch. You never know who in your game doesn't like glitchers who reports you and saves the game in their File Share and tells us about it. Our forum admins and VIPs along with JD_2020 (Community Manager) will be managing the communication directly. - Black Ops multiplayer designer David Vonderhaar on the CoD forums

Remember, folks- the new file share allows you to shop hackers and glitchers straight to Treyarch with all the proof they'll need to swing the banhammer.

In other news, Activision found themselves in hot water this week for only printing male avatar codes in the Hardened and Prestige editions. Springing into emergency damage control, they've now issued two universal codes to nab the female avatar gear. Girls, start your downloading!

Redeem code GYVF8-PF7RY-28D7V-VGWV8-CFGRM will snag you the SR 71 Flight Suit, and R76BQ-CR3MF-G2TTF-9G36R-BQWJD provides the Woods Outfit.

Rumour Control: Space CoD, Overkill 2, Late Rising!

From Lags And Douchebags To The Rumour Overload - News Roundup 10th November 2010

  • Sledgehammer's Call of Duty to be set in space? Okay, this is a strange one. It's no secret that Sledgehammer is working on a CoD "action adventure" that's going to try something different The internet is currently buzzing with suggestions that this latest title will be set in the future... in space... featuring "space marines"... in space. This is nutty enough to be true- though I'd file under wait and see for now. [Gamasutra]
  • House Of The Dead Overkill 2 in the works? Oh God, I hope this turns out to be true. HOTD: Overkill was a vulgar, self-aware and utterly groovy grindhouse homage that rebooted the venerable franchise with a newfound sense of humour. NintendoLife has reported that a sequel is on the way (to the Wii, we can safely assume). File this one under very likely.
  • MGS Rising Delayed Until 2012? Raiden's 'Lightning Bolt Action' title has ostensibly been pushed back until 2012 (though the 2011 release date was far from certain). Considering the long wait between most Metal Gear Solid games, I'd go ahead and file this one under almost certain.

Microsoft Still Discussing iPlayer With BBC

From Lags And Douchebags To The Rumour Overload - News Roundup 10th November 2010

BBC iPlayer was once again conspicuously absent from the latest Xbox 360 title update despite both Sony and Nintendo adding it to their consoles. However, Xbox UK boss Stephen McGill has revealed to Eurogamer that Microsoft is still in “discussions” with the BBC about finally making this happen.

There are conversations going on. The thing for us is, how do we add some magic sauce to that so that it’s different? A lot of people are watching that on their PC. How many people are going to watch it on the console unless we add something different?

Here's an idea, Steve. Stop trying to make money from it (as an anonymous BBC source claimed earlier this year) and don't add any magic sauce at all! Just upscale, stick it on the dashboard and have done with it.

Kinect Out Today

From Lags And Douchebags To The Rumour Overload - News Roundup 10th November 2010

Well we've been banging on about it long enough. Microsoft's vaunted motion capture camera peripheral has released today, with many retailers predicting that they'll sell out in as little as 24 hours.

Already got one? Waiting on a delivery? Why not check out our automatic software buyers guide for the cheapest deals?

I watched something on iplayer (PS3) last week. It was just like watching normal telly! (in a room full of fog) (with a large dollop of vaseline smeared across the screen). Suggest Microsoft do something about only allowing HD feeds from iplayer. If the BBC do such a thing.

Jonathan Lester  Nov. 10, 2010 at 18:11

Sure, they offer HD streams. My experience with the PS3's iPlayer has been somewhat better- in fact, it often upscales to mock 720 depending on the quality of the camerawork.

It seems that Microsoft are trying to find an angle to market iPlayer as a Gold Only perk, which goes against the Beeb's philosophy.

David  Nov. 10, 2010 at 18:18

Fair enough, maybe quality depends on the particular programme.
I agree with the BBC that it shouldn't be hidden behind a paid Gold subscription (if that is indeed what MS are pushing for).

An article dealing with rumours and not a single mention of GT5, the biggest game of the year by a large margin?

With the storm hitting forums and speculation about it's release over the last 3-4 days I'm amazed you didn't run with that.

Gunn  Nov. 10, 2010 at 19:12

I've had no issues with the iPlayer either, quality is great.

Matt Gardner  Nov. 10, 2010 at 19:15

It's been going on for over a year now. This is the thing. Their competitors have it already. There are no real obstacles at all. The only thing stopping an X360 version of iPlayer, or any other free legit TV streaming services, is corporate greed at Microsoft's end. Pure and simple. They can um and ah and spout PR balls about 'magic sauce' but it all comes down to money.

You'd think sofas are all the magic sauce you'd need. I like the fact I can watch iPlayer in bed from my laptop...but I also like the fact I can stream it on a massive TV in the lounge from a Wii/PS3.

I hate to blow my own trumpet- but this is old news to us! We were on it from day one.

Give me some credit. ;)

A couple of lines citing a date that is currently a distant second favourite, and also based on some rather shaky info doesn't really do testament to the videos being leaked, and the pandemonium surrounding this games release.

GTPlanet has been bombarded with so many extra visitors that the forums can't keep up. GAG is in a virtual frenzy. Sony remain stoic whilst the community is at the point of canibalising itself and anyone else who happens to get in the way.

You could easily write a page on the info leaking out each day (far more current information than contained in the articles you linked).

The last game that had a release on this scale was Mario 2 back in the early nineties, and it was a totally different ball-game then as I'm sure you can appreciate.

Thanks Microsoft - I have the ONLY console that doesn't work with iplayer or provide a browser. Thats the MS 'magic sauce' at work. Wish I had got a PS3 instead....

(At least my PC does everything)
