Rockstar Will Have "No Presence" At E3

From Nintendo's Grave to Rockstar's E3 Retreat - News Roundup 1st June 2010

With L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3 on the horizon and analysts predicting a GTA 5  reveal, we were sure that Rockstar would be bringing the rain to E3. Bizarrely, this couldn't be further from the truth. Completely out of left field, Rockstar have announced that they will not be turning up to E3 at all, opting to show off their titles at a press event to be held at a later date (TBA).

This announcement was preceded by rumours that Rockstar had pulled an important game launch from their E3 lineup, likely to be either GTA5 or Agent if our intel is solid. It seems that Rockstar hasn't quite got their big surprise reveal up to scratch yet and want to reveal their wares in one go... as well as shrewdly garnering extra publicity by staggering their announcement after the E3 hype dies down. Looks like we'll have to wait a few more weeks to see what Rockstar has in store for us. [VG247]

FFVII Writer: Nintendo is "Digging Its Own Grave"

From Nintendo's Grave to Rockstar's E3 Retreat - News Roundup 1st June 2010

Nintendo is making money hand over fist with its wildly successful Wii console and DS handheld, but Apple's starting to encroach on their handheld territory with the iPhone and iPad. Whilst the games quality on Apple handheld platforms are traditionally terrible, both analysts and Nintendo execs have identified them as a potential threat. FFVII and Chrono Trigger Writer Masato Kato is the latest pundit to join the debate, stating in no uncertain terms that Nintendo's days are numbered due to increased competition and their niche marketing strategies/game lineup.

"With the iPad going on sale, the epoch of Nintendo is finished," Kato tweeted. "But with the DS and the Wii, it's been digging its own grave."

Big words, but they ring a little hollow considering that Kato has recently written the Mana series... that was released on the DS. [Kotaku]

Epic Mickey Gets Steampunk Revamp

From Nintendo's Grave to Rockstar's E3 Retreat - News Roundup 1st June 2010

Kingdom Hearts proved that Disney characters are more than just cutesy mascots- and Epic Mickey's concept art floored us with its blend of mature post-apocalyptic and steampunk imagery with the traditional Disney vibe. Unfortunately, the following screenshots were about as disappointing and bland as I've ever seen. I've seen Wii minigame collections with more character.

However, it seems that Junction Point Studios has taken the hint. The humiliating, savage and unrelenting public mockery that the gaming community poured onto the leaked screenshots was followed by several months of complete silence- and it appears that Warren Spector's going back to the drawing board (literally). Reports indicate that the entire graphical style has been brought back into line with the awesome steampunk concept art- and that we'll be able to get to grips with the leaner, meaner and darker Epic Mickey at E3. New Earthworm Jim HD Trailer is Totally Groovy!

Earthworm Jim still has a special place in our hearts (and shelves) thanks to its bizarre weaponry and charming sense of anarchic humour- and fans have been waiting for a downloadable HD version ever since XBLA and PSN were in their infancy.

Luckily, the Earthworm Jim HD version is nearly upon us, with impressively retouched graphics and a four-player cooperative mode. It's a shame that we won't be able to choose from a selection of Earthworm Jim's cartoon characters, but at least we'll be able to mitigate the punishing difficulty by bringing a few mates along for the ride.

Don't believe us? Check out the trailer!

Why was it again that Spectre decided Epic Mickey should be a Wii exclusive? Surely this game needs HD to live up to those early concept visuals.

Anyone know if its to use Wii motion as its control? As with Move and Natal now available this year it doesn't seem like a reason to not bring this game to PS3/360.

Well Earthworm Jim HD will be getting bought!

I don't really think Nintendo have got anything to worry about. The DS is still beating the pants off of pretty much everything else and the Wii is still absurdly popular. In the latter's case, any company that can take over a market on the back of one good game a year, a half-arsed gimmick and Ant and Dec are a force to be reckoned with.

The iPad won't challenge the DS much - install base is far too large and you can't play Pokemon on an iPad - but it might kill off the PSP.

Not likely given the price, I'm more likely to buy a second PSP than an ipad.
