Hybrid Kinect/Controller Games In Development
Thank God for that. Despite Kinect being marketed as a controller-less gaming peripheral, many pundits and critics (including members of the Dealspwn community) have been bemused by Microsoft's reticence to look into the seemingly obvious move of creating games that use the new motion as well as a standard controller for fine inputs and tactile feedback. Luckily, it seems that Microsoft have been paying attention.
Kinect developer Alex Kipman has blown the lid off of the concept, stating that there are currently "hybrid" games in development that simultaneously use both input methods.
We'll continue to have controller-only games. We love controller-free games, we love Kinect experiences and we'll continue to grow our set of those as well. What we haven't really talked about, but exist, are hybrid games.
Games that are using the controller, which we know and love, and pieces, if not all, of the Kinect experiences to again make those experiences more immersive, more fun and more emotionally connected. - Alex Kipman to Gamesindustry
In other Kinect news, Microsoft is leaving Kinect retrofitting of previously-released titles squarely in the hands of their developers. It will be interesting to see whether many studios feel the need to add Kinect support to their lineups over the coming months.
Xbox Indies Consider Jumping Ship To Sony, Steam & Apple
As reported earlier this week, this latest Xbox 360 dashboard update has caused untold misery to the Indie scene by sidelining their wares as a speciality shop rather than a bonafide gaming marketplace. I've been in constant contact with a number of boutique independent studios and developers over the last few days, and the overall consensus is that even the established core may have to consider PSP minis, Steam and the iPhone as greener pastures if the situation isn't addressed or at least discussed in a mature fashion.
MStar Games head honcho and XNA community guru Mike "DrMistry" Bergenstjema has been staunchly outspoken on this issue over the last few days and has offered the following heartbreaking update in a recent email.
The saddest thing is that the [Indie developers] are getting very similar treatment from MS at the moment too – unanswered questions, problems with developer ID verification, problems with the submission/review process…and a lot of them are slowly getting up, walking out and heading back to Android and iPhone. It’s hard enough to write a good game without having your publisher stab you in the back.
Hear this, Microsoft. Actually listen to your Indie developers before they slip through your fingers. They're your main unique selling point- so it's high time to treat them with some respect. Otherwise your loss will be Sony and Apple's gain.
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood Has MGS Rising Cameo
Following the appearance of Altair's outfit in Metal Gear Solid 4, Konami and Ubisoft have collaborated on some more crossover clothing. Gamers can expect to don Raiden's cyborg ninja outfit in the upcoming Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, which should put the fear of God into the primitive Templars. [Thanks, Eurogamer]
We'd also love to see Raiden's signature HF Blade as an unlockable weapon... but maybe that's asking too much.
No Plans For PS3 Deadly Premonition
Deadly Premonition is one of the most divisive games to have ever received a UK release. As I stated in the full review, it's an insane mix of archaic game design with a truly incredible storyline and characters that will stick with you forever. Many members of our community have been wondering about whether it will be making a European PS3 appearance, but I'm afraid that it's not likely to happen in the near future. After getting in touch with Rising Star Games, Digital Communications rep Tristan DeFries had the following to offer:
Unfortunately I'm not aware of any plans to publish the PS3 version. I can't add anything to that - sorry.
All hope is not lost, though. Remember that, as with all cult hits, overwhelming fan demand could well tip Deadly Premonition onto the PS3. Want it? Let them know! Otherwise, you'll have to import.
News Update: GT5 Dated For November 30th?
My latest retailer rumours place Gran Turismo's launch date squarely on November 30th, meaning that yet another anticipated title could be making its debut later this month. We'll keep you posted.
Update: New info from official Sony outlet sonystyle.com seems to back this up, stating that it will be available "on or about" the 30th. Consider this as solid as it gets for now.
