Next-Gen Starts Tonight: Tell Us Where You Stand!

Eight years after the Xbox 360 launched, its successor is set to release and kick off a new console generation here in Europe. With the PS4 snapping at its heels next Friday, you'd better believe that we're ready to deploy all manner of coverage. We've already cracked the seal on our PS4. The excitement is mounting. We are so very ready.

For now, though, there's not much we can do but wait until midnight (unless you're Matt, who's still trying to get his video capture box to work with the office PS4). Perhaps we should while away the time by having a little chat.

So, dear reader, we want to know where you stand on next-gen, and what you're buying. Are you splurging out on an Xbox One? Waiting a few days for the PS4? Laughing about the very idea of owning a console since your PC puts both to shame? Loving the Wii U? Or waiting, perhaps, until the smoke clears to make a truly informed decision? Since I'll be getting my Xbox One at the same time as everyone else, then starting on coverage, feel free to tell us about your first impressions and what you make of the launch titles! We're all in the same boat.

In the spirit of sharing, I pre-ordered an Xbox One and it's currently on its way. Here's what we all make of the PS4, both positive and negative.

Your turn!

Pre-ordered a day 1 PS4 from ASDA after seeing it posted on HUKD earlier today in the mega bundle. May yet regret doing so but I think the hype got to me.

That along with the fact that I'm seriously enjoying my Vita at the moment. Being able to remote play the PS4 on my Vita whilst the OH is watching X Factor is something I look forward to.

Right now I'm standing at my front door, having a smoke whilst browsing.

At midnight I'll be standing in a queue at my local Game. 8)

Cod, Forza, and Lego Marvel here I come! :D

These new consoles are tempting but the 906 games on my Steam account dictate that I'm saving all my cash for a Steam Machine.

No contest really. I do realise that I may be in a very obsessive minority X)

XBOX One coming tomorrow from Argos with Fifa 14 and Forza 5.

Then I've got two PS4s coming, one from ASDA and one from Amazon.de which includes Killzone, extra controller and eye (although that console will probably land at some point in the new year - oh well it's only for the spare room). I've also got Killzone (another copy, whoops!), Knack, Assassin's Creed IV, Battlefield IV and Call of Duty Ghosts coming for PS4.

Can't wait for christmas hols!!! Not sure I'm going to get a chance to play on anything before then.

Steambox is very tempting too. At least that way there really would be no backwards compatibility issues.

Hopefully given that both console manufacturers (sorry Nintendo) have switched to architecture more similar to that of a PC then backwards compatibility might be more feasible.

Just a single PS4 for me. Still have a huge backlog on the PS3 but I just can't resist BF4 on PS4 (just hope it is fixed by next week).

Oh and r3tract, I'm after a copy of Killzone:SF ;)

Topboss  Nov. 22, 2013 at 00:01

for those in need, ive been told by a reliable source that Argos will have about thousand units available for delivery from tomorrow

Late  Nov. 22, 2013 at 00:06

Currently in a queue of about 100-150 people. This might take a while...

JonLester  Nov. 22, 2013 at 00:25

Hang in there Late!8)

Thanks for the tip, Topboss.

These consoles are not "next-gen". I'll carry on playing at 1080p 60fps on my PC, like I already have been for years :p

And I'll carry on not giving a ****, like I already haven't been for years

My Xbox One has just arrived. Going to ensconce myself in a dark corner with a camera and some unboxing gloves for a bit.

Huzzah! Mines due for delivery at 12:30-1:30pm - and they've even sent me the drivers name so I can hunt him down and make him pay if he's late*

*As in the act of not being on time, and not the Dealspwn posting Late. Unless he's my delivery driver and he's late.

JoeDark64  Nov. 22, 2013 at 09:42

Parcelforce don't give a delivery time so I am sitting here, constantly looking out the window, watching Jeremy Kyle while wearing my unboxing gloves.... Can't believe this guy cheated on her 7 times!!

Anarchist  Nov. 22, 2013 at 10:17

How about these then? Possibly the worlds greatest unboxing gloves?

Or, some (un)boxing gloves? :\

Congrats Jon :D
Fingers crossed for everyone else :D
Hate that I ran out of holidays and have to be at work now while my shiny new toy is sat at home waiting for me! (No, Anarchist, I'm not out delivering xboxes :p )

Got home with it around 1.10am.
Setting it up went as smooth as you like, as did bringing over my gamertag etc.
The day one update was smaller than expected (varying reports said 1.2gb - 2.0gb but it was only 500mb) but it took about half an hour - I guess the servers are taking a bit of a hammering.

I bought the Day One Forza edition, and the game is a physical disk - whereas those who got the normal FIFA version will have a digital download. I also bought COD on disk, and I have Lego Marvel ordered - but that won't be available for about a week. All disks appear to have a mandatory installation to HDD. I think the installation for Forza was about 5gb but I wasn't paying attention tbh - was busy b*ggering about with customising profile etc. You can't play the game straight away, but when it was partly installed (about 35%? rough guess (a few minutes) - again I was preoccupied so never paid attention to the game installation) it flashed up a message saying it's okay to play now and the rest will install in the background.
Played the first three races (beautiful game from the very little I've seen), but it was about 3.30am by then and my back was aching from the little bit of crawling around behind the tv - and from carrying the console, which is heavier than expected - so I decided to call it a night. I ejected the Forza disk and put the COD disk in to start that installing to HDD so that I'm good to go on both games tonight. I then got messages telling me to put the Forza disk back in as it was still installing. D'oh! Ah well, I'll sort it all out tonight.

I think I'll get a wall mount (or shelf) for the kinect. I have it in front of the tv at present, and it works okay - but having it further back against the wall will allow it to see more of the room.
Also need to have a play about with the hdmi-in options. Will probably feed my Sky in, but might feed in the media player instead.
Controller's good, but will take a little bit of getting used to. The thumbsticks are smaller than on the 360, but have a great feel and grip to them. The feedback in the triggers is great. The bumpers and face buttons are fractionally off where they used to be, but I'll get used to them in no time.

Voice control is a bit iffy on occasion, early impression. Not sure if it's my accent, the room setup, my being a bit quiet because the family were asleep, or just me getting used to asking the right things, but a couple of times it did the wrong thing and a few times it didn't seem to recognise my commands at all.

Of course I only had a fairly quick play with it all, and it'll be a different story in a few days' time.

I can confirm, though, that saying "xbox on" and watching the console turn on and go to your personal homescreen is pretty much the most awesome thing ever.

The unboxing video is uploading even as we speak, and I'm now very tempted to disappear for a while.

@JoeDark64: Boo! How dare he! And she was so loyal to him while he was in prison!

@Anarchist: I "found" some interesting mitts. Definitely didn't look in the "Saturday night only" section of my wardrobe. No. Scurrilous rumours all.

@Late: Glad to hear you managed to get some time with it before work today! Great impressions - since we've all got the console at the same time, I'd definitely be up for hearing what everyone made of it.

Genuinely I feel like a kid at Christmas, even though I have a PC with beefier specs sitting upstairs.

JonLester  Nov. 22, 2013 at 11:09

Also, seriously, do share your first experiences with the Xbox One. If we get a few, I might try and round them up (with due credit, of course) - maybe we can collaborate on this. If you've any pics or vines, we'll stick them up if you like.

Just a thought. We're all in next-gen together, you know!

Good luck and happy gaming, everyone waiting for delivery!

Late  Nov. 22, 2013 at 11:12

I feel like a kid at Christmas...

Damned right! :D

If poss, keep half an eye on the time as it's doing it's day one download, and installing disks, Jon, just for info.
I didn't glance at the clock at all, so only have a very vague idea of how long each took based around the rather imprecise "I went for a smoke shortly before it started, and I went for a smoke just as it finished so it was probably about 20-odd minutes". (Naturally downloads will vary according to packages and time of day, but a rough guideline's better than nothing.)

Anarchist  Nov. 22, 2013 at 11:15

I think the installation for Forza was about 5gb but I wasn't paying attention tbh - was busy b*ggering about with customising profile etc.

Thanks for the updates guys, you're making me even more excited :O
Just one quick question (Late):

Does this mean that while the games are preinstalling, you don't have to sit and watch them? You can head back and do whatever? Is it just dashboard stuff you can do, or could you Skype, or watch something on Netflix, for example?

Yeah, you're free to do other stuff.
You put the disk in and it automatically downloads any patch and installing the game to HDD, but that's happening in one of the smaller tiles on your main dash - you're free to do anything else.

I updated my profile pic (the one that carried over from my 360 was a bit small), had a very quick look on IE, and started the Youtube app downloading while it was doing it's thing with Forza.

Not sure if you can make it out, there, but image thumbnail above shows the initial download is 20% complete, with 401mb remaining.

There's also my two games, the controller, and the Kinect in it's awkward temporary position.

Speaking of the kinect, it does this whole routine to get set up. I don't remember the original doing that, but I only had it (borrowed) for a day and it was a long time ago. You need to keep quiet while it plays some tune which lets it calibrate the room's audio dynamics etc.
If you move the kinect you need to recalibrate it.

Many thanks Late for the excellent info :)

JonLester  Nov. 22, 2013 at 11:57

You're a hero, Late. Outstanding intel. 8)

Yeah, my update also weighed in at around 500MB, though took the best part of 45 minutes to download.

DivideByZero  Nov. 22, 2013 at 11:59

Exciting times... even though I am waiting for Halo 5 till I get the Xbox.

Sitting tight waiting for my Amazon PS4 next week.
