You might think it’s just a North American sport but ice hockey is alive and well in the UK. OK, so some of its leagues may have closed a couple of times in the last decade, but they’re still going! And there’s nothing sports fans like doing more than reliving their favourite athletic game, slumped in a sofa mashing controller buttons. So the good news is Zavvi has slashed the price of 2K Games' hockey sim NHL 2K10, it just shy of £1 cheaper than The HUT but way less than half the price of most other retailers. Making this a total bargain.
The question is do you opt for this 2K Games version of hockey or EA's NHL 10 version? It’s generally accepted that the EA version is the superior game, but that’s still commanding a top-whack price of around £39 at most retailers. The truth of the matter is that this version might not be as good, but there’s nothing wrong with it. In fact you can argue that NHL 2K10 is the more fun to play, as it takes a more arcade approach to gameplay, versus the hardcore ultra-realistic simulation path that EA wants to lead us down.
This is where NHL 2K10 wins, you can just pick up the controls and play - perfect for enjoying with friends online or if you’re crazy enough, sat in the same room. There are some nice additions here such as a two-on-two mini-rink mode, plus an outdoor four-on-four mode. While for the hockey-Statos out there the franchise mode enables more management-based levels of interaction with your team. Follow the finances, player stats, rosters and all of this can be posted to your own online 2K Games blog, which sounds, fascinating if you like that sort of thing. But frankly for £6 even if you only have passing interest in ice hockey, this could be a bargain.
