Ice hockey fans, prepare to don your virtual skates, as Amazon are offering NHL 2K9 for only £7.29!
Shot into a price-comparison, Amazon’s offer for NHL 2K9 proved to be the cheapest available, with a two-pound saving! NHL 2K9 improved upon the already successful formula, updating the controls to appease both veterans and newcomers alike. However, the game failed to impress critics, averaging a 69/100 on MetaCritic.
NHL 2K9 is a traditional annual sports game, offering the same gameplay and core appeal it’s been refining over the years, along with an array of subtle, and not to subtle, tweaks. For instance, instead of pressing a button to shoot, you must now flick the analogue sticks, ala Fight Night. The animation roster was also updated, with over 1,400 new animations, such as puck collisions and blocked shots. The series’ fighting engine, where enraged hockey-players engage in slippery combat, has been improved.
Despite these plethora of improvements, NHL 2K9 angered more fans than it probably expected. The button-bashing scheme they’d perfected on previous instalments had been replaced by a slower, more realistic analogue-variant, and the general move towards greater verisimilitude seemed to be the chief complaint amongst fans.
