We had high hopes for Ninja Gaiden 3, but so far we're less than impressed. Slashing up soldiers and fighting mechanized spider units feels incongruous for the traditionally fantastical series, and I've yet to see a single leg or arm lopped off with a shower of fluorescent red blood. Hopefully Jon and Matt can get some hands-on and deliver conclusive evidence on Team Ninja's third installment. In the meantime, it has been revealed Ninja Gaiden 3 will feature 8-player online multiplayer on both Xbox 360 and PS3.
"A rich and challenging set of online modes are being implemented, giving players the option to play cooperatively or competitively," boasts a press-release dispatched at E3 2011 today. "New challenges, characters and missions await those who choose to join the Shadows of the World online!".
Team Ninja experimented with multiplayer in Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma, headed up by Itagaki's then deputy, Yosuke Hayashi, who is now steering the Team Ninja ship in the wake of Itagaki's departure. NG3 allows up to 8 players to get involved, either in co-operative or competitive play. I'm expecting the former will throw ever-increasing waves of enemies at you, whereas the latter might incorporate some form of a brawling free-for-all.
And in related news, Nintendo has revealed an exclusive version of Ninja Gaiden 3 is set for release on the Wii U. They provided no further details to explain how it'll be different from its 360 and PS3 counterparts, but I expect it'll have something to do with that nifty controller everyone's yapping about.
