Despite Lackluster Critical Reception
We're not the biggest 3DS fans here at Dealspwn. Don't get me wrong, we love the system; it's fit to burst with potential. But that's just it; potential. We've yet to see a true game-changer on the system - sorry, Nintendo, re-releasing Ocarina of Time again doesn't count - and I'm still not totally sold on the new Mario. That said, while the 3DS couldn't stick the landing with the critics, it appears you, the general public, have taken to it well, with Nintendo reporting first year sales of the 3DS are all set to outpace its predecessor, the DS.
"With a massive lineup of software on the way and the first-year sales record of Nintendo DS in its sights, Nintendo 3DS enters its first holiday season with a full head of steam," boasts Nintendo's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, Scott Moffitt. The 3DS just broke 1.65 million worldwide in eight months, and with the DS shifting 2.37 million in twelve months, it's easy to see why Nintendo is so confident of eclipsing that number.
Furthermore, the 3DS shifted 250, 000 games over October, equaling the same number on Nintendo's home console, the Wii, which enjoys a far larger user base and software volume. Super Mario Land 3D and Mario Kart 7 are all set to release on the 3DS soon, which should give the system a modest bump in sales and ensure its on course to meet expectations.
