Huge Screen, Better Battery Life, No AC Adaptor
Nintendo has officially revealed the 3DS XL: a monstrous handheld console with a 90% larger screen and improved battery life. It's a sexy beast to be sure, but a few strange omissions have left us slightly puzzled.
The colossal XL packs the largest screen ever to grace a Nintendo handheld device, 4.88 inches wide compared to the 3DS' 2.02. Naturally the entire device is much larger in order to cope.
Nintendo promise that the XL will feature improved battery life, clocking in at around 3.5-6.5 hours for 3DS games and 10 hours for DS games. As an added bonus, it will also ship with a 4GB memory card, which is twice the size of the SD card included with the 3DS.
And yet, the 3DS XL will lack a couple of incredibly basic features. It doesn't feature a second circle pad, which is potentially aggravating since it won't fit into existing Circle Pad Pro peripherals. And, even more shockingly, an AC Adaptor won't be included, though it is thankfully compatible with existing 3DS, DSi, and DS XL AC adaptors.
The 3DS XL is set for a July 28th launch in Europe, and we really, really want one. We're just not sure whether, as early adopters who were hit with an inflated price point, we might be twice shy.
