It’s hard not to admire Nintendo, at almost every turn in recent years it's lambasted by huge sections of the gaming press for its toy-like attempts at portable and mainstream consoles. But unit sales of over 125 million units for the DS in one form or another is simply staggering. So, why not help prop up Nintendo’s coffers and pick up this bargain from HMV. It may be Pink but you’re secure enough in your sexuality for that, aren’t you? If not HMV have the Red version for £99.99 bundled with Mario Kart DS, which stacks up well in our book.
There’s not much real choice in the hand-held market these days. It is utterly dominated by Nintendo while those plucky upstarts Sony try and distract us with the relaunch of the PSP. The next best alternative is the iPod touch, which Apple has done a fine job of driving into the gaming sector, despite the disadvantage of not having any hard controls.
Effectively any competition for the DS Lite comes more from the DSi and the soon to be released DSi XL. But the DSi is around £60 more just for the microphone and cameras it sports along with an improved processor, but really that makes little difference to the games you’re playing. The new DSi XL is due for launch on the 5th March and looks like it will only be £20 more than the current DSi, but that’s approaching twice the price of this deal for something that plays the same games!
Either way the DS clearly has one of the widest gaming catalogues around and that’s without including the catalogue from the Game Boy Advance, which can be plugged into the cartridge slot.
