We've made a conscious choice here at Dealspwn not to cover NPD news from across the pond. Why? Well, they don't track European figures, opting to focus solely on the North American market. However, that's all about to change, as the NPD Group has announced plans to expand their market research service - which tracks sales figures - to "several European countries".
In a press release on their official website, the NPD group announced their intentions to expand their Games Industry: Total Consumer Spend Service to key European territories, where they will "track consumer spending for games content". NPD is very popular in North America, where their monthly reports provide statistics on each console and game's sales figures. It often lights up a fanboy-war or two (hundred), and is sure to incite much debate over here.
So far, NPD is targeting the United Kingdom, France and Germany as their first ports of call, soon to be followed by a major push into the Asian markets. The service will begin in Q4 2011 - October to December - with NPD hoping to "harmonize" their existing North American service with European figures to provide an all-encompassing insight into the industry as a whole.
"The new digital distribution channels in video games are not country specific," explains Anita Frazier, an industry analyst at NPD. "They are global in nature, which is why NPD is taking its proven, proprietary methodology, developed over a number of years, and applying it to a global perspective." [NPD]
