Office Of Fair Trading Launches Investigation Into In-App Purchases

Urges Parents To Complete Survey

Following numerous reports of children clocking up insane in-app purchase bills on their parents' credit cards, the government has launched a full investigation into whether the practice is actually lawful and equitable. As part of this initiative, the Office Of Fair Trading released an online questionnaire aimed at parents, with the intention of collecting details about how families approach the App Store and microtransactions in general.

The survey will run until June 28th (as far as I can tell, responses can be emailed in). We'll let you know if anything comes of it.

Q14 - If you allowed your child unrestricted access to make in-app purchases how do you rate your stupidity, from 0-10 (zero being a moron, ten being brain-dead)?

I appreciate there'll always be the occasional mistake (and sods law indicates it'll be me next, now), but the number of people who are letting their kids play with an unlocked device that's linked to their credit card is just ridiculous...

There's no way I'd even let an android or ios device have my credit card details, to be honest. If I want credit on them I buy a giftcard. Not only are they secure, but they're often cheaper, too.

I have to agree with Late here.
