Studio HIVE, a Thailand-based developer, has announced that they've secured the rights to develop a videogame set in the Ong-Bak universe. In case you don't know, Ong-Bak is a brutal 2003 action film that launched Muay Thai legend Tony Jaa to superstardom... and the game will apparently deliver "much deeper story involvement" on top of all the sickening violence. We've got more details below.
Studio HIVE will be working closely with license holder Sahamongkol Film International to ensure that Ong-Bak: The Game is as authentic as possible, and in order to "achieve a much deeper story involvement for all Ong-Bak fans." The game is currently slated for "various" platforms and a 2012 release.
Ong-Bak is well known as a powerful international martial arts brand. We are very selective with our licensing partners and found in Studio HIVE the right partner to bring Ong-Bak to gaming platforms. Their approach to tie in movie and game is the right way to create a perfect interactive entertainment. - Akarapol Techaratanaprasert, Sahamongkol Film International
It’s a great honour for our team to work on the very first Ong-Bak multiplatform game. As a Thai development studio we love the movie and have a deep understanding of the Ong-Bak brand values and we make sure that the videogame will be an inspiring martial arts action experience for gamers. - Kan Supabanpot Studio HIVE General Manager
Gameplay details are still thin on the ground, and we'll bring you more as we hear it.
