Okami, Viewtiful Joe Creator Calls Out PS All-Stars Battle Royale As 'Just A Rip-Off'

Platinum's Hideki Kamiya is legendary for designing radical new games. He brought us Okami, Viewtiful Joe and Bayonetta, amongst many others. However, a tweet regarding his love of innovating rather than imitating devolved into a full-blown argument over the weekend, wherein the veteran designer called out PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale as a 'rip-off.'

The first post was innocent enough: a little observation about how fan service can sometimes lead to a lack of innovation. However, as followers got involved with the discussion, the conversation soon turned to PS All-Stars Battle Royale... and how it offends Kamiya's sensibilities as a designer.

You can follow the translated highlights over at NeoGAF. Before you get involved, remember that Kamiya's criticisms come from a conceptual and design standpoint.

Suffice to say, we love Kamiya here at Dealspwn (though we're excited about Battle Royale), so I won't weigh in to keep our platform of objectivity intact.

Yes it is a rip-off but there's a lot you could plaster that label all over, Forza a GT rip-off? How many CoD rip-offs are there! GTA rip-offs like Saints Row and True Crime are now offering something a bit different. Darksiders was a combination of rip-offs mainly Zelda but it's now on its own legs with the sequel seeming to be well received. Sampling and cover versions have been going on since the start of the music industry, granted some with more creative merit than others. It comes accross a bit short sighted and bitter from this bloke, after all imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

I think it sounds like you're confusing games with genres. I get what you're saying but for example, COD is not the original fps nor war fps. Gameplay is the main thing that distinguishes games as you can only have so many genres. Smash bros is a quite unique game - original company characters in a casual "fun" side view fighting game. Too many coincides in Battle Royale in my opinion. Yes it is flattering to an extent but it is lazy and uncreative especially to a designers point of view such as Hideki.

I think you're getting confused with my focus. Is your point that Smash Bros is a genre unto itself? I would have classed it as a 2D brawler of which there are many. Its gameplay though is quite specific to the actual game itself hence why I've referenced individual games and not genres when mentioning other so called rip-offs.
