"Landmark" Origin Update Coming Soon

Origin, BF3 Multiplayer Down Tomorrow Morning

EA has detailed a new "landmark" update for their Origin PC download client, which adds some nifty GUI tweaks and performance improvements. More details after the break.

In other news, EA has announced that Origin will be going offline from 6:00 until 09:30 tomorrow morning. Battlefield 3 and Mass Effect 3 PC multiplayer will naturally be affected. We don't know whether this has anything to do with the update, but it's mightily suggestive.

"Smoother client performance" is probably the most exciting new feature of Origin 9.0 (to put it mildly), but EA has taken player feedback to heart to provide some useful cosmetic features. The friends list will take the form of a floating box than can be easily docked to the sides of the screen, while the 'My Games' library can now be resized to fit more icons onto the screen. Navigation has been retooled with drop-down boxes, bringing Origin more in line with Steam's layout.

Oh, and there's also going to be an in-client clock. More details here.

Origin 9.0 will be rolling out in the next few days, starting with players who opted into Beta updates. Considering tomorrow's scheduled downtime, we suspect that it will be available sooner rather than later. Will it be enough to convince the critics?

Woo - they've added a clock!

For "landmark" I would be expecting something more like "DRM-free" or "we've doubled the size of our catalogue".
