A fantastic bargain here for all you fantasy lovers out there. Overlord – Dark Legend for the Nintento Wii is being offered by Asda for the price of £11.91 which gives you a massive saving (of almost £6) when compared to the next best price of £17.73 from The Hut. So, if you’re into fantasy/action real-time-strategy games then get ready to unleash the dark side in this latest installment of the demonic Overlord series.
Basically, Overlord is a dark and twisted fairly tale in which the player takes control of this evil lord – who looks a bit like the one from Lord of the Rings. Then, as they journey through a mystical world of demons and Goblins, the player must recruit various minions who help them along the way. These satanic little side kicks come in a variety of casts, with some being perfect for stealth, others capable of going under water and some being able to absorb fire and attack opponents. With these allies, the player must attempt to negotiate a series of puzzles and defeat a host of bosses in order to progress through each level.
However, although highly entertaining with its quirky dark humour and new takes on classic fairy tales, Overlord is - in practically every other respect - a very mediocre game. Although it has a host of potential, sadly, this is something which the designers fail to exploit. As a result the game fails to deliver anything particularly mind blowing. The puzzles are incredibly easy – literally consisting of telling one of your minions to go and pull a lever – while the bosses can be overrun in seconds without the player ever needing to use their sword.
If you like games with a bit of challenge to them then Overlord certainly is not for you. However, that is not say it’s a total failure, and if games with high entertainment value are more up your street, for £12 you could do definitely do a lot worse.
