SEGA has confirmed that Phantasy Star Online 2 will be both free to play and download when it releases on PC in "early summer." Instead of traditional subscriptions, this anticipated Sci-Fi MMO sequel will make its money through optional item microtransactions (after all, everyone's going to want the biggest, beefiest Mags). The PC version will be accompanied by an iOS and Android App in Winter 2012, which shares data with the full version and offers a pared-back experience with social game features.
A PS Vita version is set to release next year (slated for "Spring" in Japan) featuring cross-platform play and the ability to use your same character across both versions. [Andriasang]
