The PS4 is going big on free-to-play, and the superb MMOFPS Planetside 2 is likely to be its crown jewel.
Not at launch, though.
Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley confirmed that DC Universe Online will launch alongside the PS4, but the console version of Planetside 2 has a vague 2014 launch window.
"We're actually helping the Sony Playstation 4 launch on November 15 [the US launch date] by having our free-to-play game DC Universe Online come to the PS4 for its launch," Smedley told Bloomberg TV in a video interview. "We're going to be following up that early next year with our next game, Planetside 2, for the PS4."
Never mind, though, seeing as you could just play it on PC right now. SOE are currently endeavouring to improve optimisation and make the gorgeous Forgelight-powered shooter less resource-intensive, allowing it to be played on a much wider variety of hardware specifications. PhysX comes highly recommended by this pundit, though.
For my (complete lack of) money, Planetside 2 probably the best free-to-play shooter on the market at present, offering gameplay that rivals even the most lavish cutscenes from most triple-A blockbusters and an astonishingly generous economy. I'd strongly suggest giving it a whirl - and joining the glorious Terran Republic on Miller. Better red than dead [enough recruiting dammit! - Ed].
