PlanetSide 2 Unveiled

Countdown to Full Reveal Underway

We don’t cover much in the way of MMORPG news at the moment (unless it involves the words ‘wars’, ‘republic’, ‘the’, ‘star’, and ‘old’, not necessarily in that order) but here’s one game that should be worth keeping an eye on. Last night President of Sony Online Entertainment John Smedley used his Twitter account to officially unveil the existence of PlanetSide 2, previously known as PlanetSide Next to the fans. The MMOFPS has long been rumoured to be in development, but now an official website, along with a countdown timer, has emerged.

Along with the website, a Facebook page has also been created for the upcoming title, and it is already creating buzz amongst the die-hard fans of the franchise.

For the uninitiated, the original PlanetSide saw three sides battle for control of multiple continents over a planet, fighting to capture numerous bases and towers for more territory and access to additional war machines, with the carnage taking place on foot, in ground vehicles, and in the air. Various classes allowed for team-based strategy, and experienced players could even order entire units of players in battle. While it has enjoyed a dedicated fanbase over the years, unpopular decisions (such as the inclusion of overpowered mechs) has seen the population dwindle and servers merge, although the game is still being played today since launching back in 2003.

While no further information is available at this time, we’ll be sure to keep you posted on any further developments, as well as what is to be revealed when the countdown ends on July 8th.

So what say you Dealspwners? Do we have any former TS, VS or NC soldiers in our ranks? Do we have any new recruits interested in the futuristic global warfare? Sound off in the comments! [Twitter]
