Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time Dated & Trailered, Will Be Free To Play

PopCap have finally lifted the lid off Plants vs Zombies 2, subtitled 'It's About Time.' This time-travelling adventure will release on iOS from July 18th, favouring a free-to-play model supported by a microtransaction store. However, you can apparently experience all the content without paying.

Details and all-important trailer below.

“We’re confident that players will see the love and attention we’ve put into this game," explains Senior producer Allen Murray in a press release statement.

“We’ve created wild new ways to experience the plants and zombies you know and love as well as packing the game with tons of completely new content, and we’re still hard at work coming up with even more cool stuff that will keep Plants vs. Zombies 2 fresh and evolving in the months and years following launch.”

Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time will feature levels set in numerous time periods, from ancient Egyptian pyramids to the Wild West and futuristic space stations. Gameplay has been "rebuilt" from the ground up, but will feature the same plant-placing defence mechanics that made the original so popular.

Any word on the PC version? Is there going to be one? Is it also going to be micro-transactions? If it is, it can stay on the virtual shelf.

I assume* that it will probably come to all manner of platforms in time - often iOS is used as the debut test bed because it's a nice closed ecosystem with a small range of devices to optimise for and very low piracy rates.

*EDIT: based on the fact that you can play the original PvZ on anything with a screen. I think there's even a toaster version.

Loved the original on pc, xb360, and android, so I've no doubt I'll be getting this when it hits android/Xbox.
