PlayStation 2 Discontinued In Japan Nearly 13 Years After It First Released

A round of applause please, folks. After twelve years and nearly ten months, the PlayStation 2 - globally, the best-selling console of all time - has finally had its production stopped by Sony Japan.

The console first launched in Japan on March 4th, 2000, and has been in continuous production since then, with over 150 million sales to date. Fresh titles, most of them iterative sports games such as PES, were still releasing for the console last year.

Famitsu revealed that Sony ceased shipping to retailers on December 28th, 2012.
