PlayStation App Lets You Queue Up PS4 Downloads, Acts As Second Screen

Will Be Free On iOS & Android

Sony has detailed the upcoming PlayStation App, which is designed to provide PS4 owners with loads of extra functionality.

According to a new post on the US PlayStation Blog, you can use the app to "stay in touch with, friends, compare trophies, view friends’ activity (including recorded or live-streamed gameplay on PS4) and access all the latest PlayStation Blog news," effectively acting as an instant messenger and social network. However, for those keenest of consumers, it will allow you to buy PSN titles remotely and instantly start the download on your PS4 back home. So, effectively, it will be ready to play by the time you get back from work.

By far its most interesting feature is use as a "second screen," much like Microsoft's SmartGlass initiative. Knack, for example, will include a free companion puzzle game, while other titles can use it to give players another perspective on the action - whether an interactive map, context sensitive menu or other practical applications.

Apparently the PlayStation App will also encourage smaller independent development, too. “There are many big publishers creating their own apps for their games, like Watch_Dogs or Battlefield, and that’s great,” Sony's Shuhei Yoshida explained. “But smaller developers can use PlayStation App to connect to PS4 and load an application, like drawing software for example, so that you don’t have to download and install a specific app on your smartphone. It’s open to all PS4 developers to use.”

As you doubtlessly already know, the PS4 launches on November 29th here in the UK.

Blimey, remember SmartGlass? Sounded really exciting when that was announced, and looked promising when it first came out.
Is it still going? It seemed to get to something akin to beta then get forgotten about - or was that just me?

(I confess I'm only loosely on topic!)

Edit: typo

Yes I think the original smartglass was really the beta to the upcoming version that is is 3.5 times faster and can have 16 SmartGlass devices working with one Xbox One.

Seems like Sony need some new ideas as they sounding more like Xbox after each announcement they make.

I still happily use smartglass on my ipad.

Well, I have to be honest, its functionality is kind of limited. The one thing it is good for though, is sending messages. Takes ages to write messages on the xbl on screen keyboard, but you can rack up whole paragraphs in a faction of the time on xbl!

Not that writing 'lol u suck' takes that long anyway, really :\

But I have to point out, Sony coming up with some new fangled amazing social idea, that's been on xbl for ages already.
