What is PlayStation +?
PlayStation + (also known as PlayStation Plus or PS +) is a paid subscription service that covers the PlayStation brand. For your money you will be able to play PS4 games online. The service is not required to play PS3 or PS Vita games online though. The best excuse to be a PlayStation + member is the Instant Game Collection.
Every month, subscribers will be given on average six free games. Two per platform on the PS4, PS3 and PS Vita. Some of these games are cross-buy too, meaning you could get a free version for multiple platforms.
As you can imagine, your console's hard drive will start to fill up quickly with so many free games each month. Thankfully, you're able to delete the core game data (separate from your progress save file) on PS3 and PS4 in order to free up some space and you can redownload the game later at no additional cost. You may redownload titles as many times as you want on up to three different consoles.
You can also add the game to your library on PS4 to download at a later date if your drive is full. You can also do this on the PSN Store website if you're yet to buy a PS4, but have a sub on PS3. On PS3 or Vita, start the download then cancel it straight away. You can download it again from the store at a later date for free as the initial download request will activate your claim while it was going free in the Instant Game Collection.
PlayStation + members are often entitled to discounts on lots of games on the PSN Store, even if they are already discounted in a sale with amounts varying from a few pence, to a few pounds. Members will also get exclusive access to online betas ahead of some releases, although these are rare.
Being a paying subscriber to PlayStation + will also allow you to upload your save files to the cloud from your PS4, PS3 or PS Vita. You can set up auto-upload features to ensure your saves are always sent to the cloud. This is useful if your console dies as you can just download the save file onto your new system. You can even take your save data and use it on a friend's console this way (a USB stick is also an option here). There's a 1GB limit, which may require some manual deleting of unwanted files on your PS4's cloud as some of the save files are quite chunky compared to the tiny PS3 ones. Note: to download a PS4 save file onto your console you will need to have the game installed first, or it won't budge. If your subscription ends you won't be able to access these files, unless you renew your membership within six months.
Share Play is a cool online feature enabled by PlayStation + that allows you to hand over the controls to a friend on your PSN list, allowing them to play a game for up to an hour. This is handy if a friend wants to try out a game before they buy or if you need help with a tough section of a game. Beware of scammers here though, as we recently heard about a gamer having all their Destiny characters deleted by someone pretending to help them with a loot exploit.
Free games? What's the catch?
You will only be able to play the games downloaded via PlayStation +'s Instant Game Collection while you have an active subscription. If it lapses they will not work. However, if you do renew, they will reactivate without you redownloading them (if you didn't delete them). So feel free to wait a while for a hotter deal if none are cheap enough for you when your sub expires.
Turn off auto-renew!
Auto-renew will charge you for new membership as soon as your existing one expires. This will be at PSN's default prices, which are considerably more expensive than most of the deals for cheap PlayStation Plus subscriptions that you'll find here at Dealspwn.com. Go into your account settings on all your PlayStation + enabled systems and turn this option off.
If you've never been a PlayStation Plus member, look out for a free trial option on the PSN store or on this page. They usually allow 14-30 days free membership with all the usual benefits. Any trial codes or free 30 day subs (often bundled with consoles) will not work if you have at any time been a member, paid or otherwise.
Feel free to ask us any questions about PlayStation + subscriptions or gift cards and we'll try to help out. Naturally, if you spot any hot deals for the above, we'd love to hear about them.
