Pokemon X & Y will bring more to the table than just 3D visuals. New battle styles will see you duelling entire mobs of foes or taking to the air, while finding online rivals, friends and trading partners will be a breeze.
The new Fairy Type, which was revealed during the E3 Nintendo Direct, is super effective against Dragons. Since they've previously only been vulnerable to Ice and fellow Dragons, this could well shake up some of the more powerful match-ups.
Two new battle formats have been announced. Horde Battles will pit you against a group of five wild Pokemon (such as Houndour, Axew, Tauros, and Miltank). Effective defence or crowd control skills will be necessary to defeat them. Meanwhile, Flying-type trainers will frequently challenge you to battle in mid-air. These Air Battles take place on soaring cliffs or other lofty perches, offering a unique visual spectacle.
The Player Search System will be one of the most profound new improvements, making the most of the 3DS' improved networking capabilities. It will function much like MiiVerse, with players able to easily find new friends to battle against, trade or just hang out with. "The PSS makes it easy to find other people playing Pokémon X or Pokémon Y near you or even on the other side of the world," explains game director Tsunekazu Ishihara.
"When the new communication feature is on, the PSS alerts players when someone nearby is playing Pokémon X or Pokémon Y and gives you the option to battle or trade with them wirelessly. Players with a wireless Internet connection can also connect with Pokémon X and Pokémon Y players anywhere in the world via the PSS, making it easy to battle or trade with others close by or thousands of miles away."
Finally, Pokemon Amie will allow players to physically interact with their roster to foster friendships, improving their battle performance (especially when using attacks like Return). You'll tickle them, offer them treats and generally feel very awkward if Lopunny turns up.
Pokemon X and Y release on October 12th worldwide - and all languages will be included to make for a truly global release. More details on the official website.
