The 3DS will receive yet another big-brand exclusive this summer in the form of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates To Infinity, which has been officially confirmed for May 17th here in the UK. As in previous Mystery Dungeon games, you'll lead your pocket monster through randomly-generated dungeons, some of which can now be accessed by finding portals in the real world using Augmented Reality. More details below.
Here's how the AR Magnagates work, as explained from the press release:
Players can discover Mystery Dungeons accessible only through Magnagates, mysterious portals activated when the Nintendo 3DS system’s cameras are used to scan round objects in the real world, such as footballs or clock faces. Once a Magnagate is discovered, the player becomes a different Pokémon to step through it and tackle the Mystery Dungeon that lies beyond. Items and money that players receive through successfully completing a dungeon revealed by a Magnagate can be used in the main adventure, too.
It's great to see more games taking advantage of the 3DS' more esoteric features. Gates To Infinity will feature Pikachu, Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott, or Axew as playable characters, while a hefty stream of DLC is apparently in the pipeline.
