Prepare to meet your Destiny next week (in beta)

Jonathan Lester
Activision, Beta, Bungie

Bungie has confirmed that the Destiny beta begins next week on PS3 and PS4, allowing pre-order customers to get involved with the Halo-esque FPSRPG. Xbox owners will have to wait a little longer... and a year for the timed-exclusive content... but either way the mysterious shooter is ready to reveal more of its secrets.

First off, the all-important dates.

  • The Beta begins first for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 at 17:00 GMT on July 17
  • The Beta begins for Xbox One and Xbox 360 at 17:00 GMT on July 23

The Beta will shut down for scheduled maintenance on July 21 – July 22 on all platforms, then reopen until 07:00 GMT on July 29

We're still not sold on the idea of using a 'beta' as a pre-order incentive -- using paying customers as testers tends to result in seriously skewed feedback -- but I think we all know that this is basically a great big preview demo build crossed with a tasty hype sandwich. And, frankly, that's fine by us. After getting involved with the recent Alpha, Matt and Brendan report that Destiny is shaping up to deliver similarly satisfying combat to Halo, only with a compelling online hook whether in PvE or PvP.

Bungie are certainly taking it seriously, and plan to treat the beta as a "full game launch."

You can expect plenty of silly special editions to waste your money on, along with a season pass that includes:

  • Expansion I: The Dark Below – set deep beneath the surface of the Moon, discover an ancient tomb that has been unsealed, and a dark god who has risen an evil army in the depths of the Hellmouth, the home of the Hive enemy race
  • Expansion II: House of Wolves – details TBA

Bear in mind that "PlayStation platforms will also include additional exclusive content for Expansion I and II and will remain exclusive until at least Fall of 2015." And, as always, don't even think about buying a season pass until you know whether the content is worth the money.

Who'll be hitting the beta next week, or the following one? Sound off the comments!
