If you happen to own an original PS3 with the SIXAXIS controller, and long for a little rumbling, then Amazon are offering the PS3’s DualShock controller for just £28.62!
According to a price-comparison, Amazon’s offer for the DualShock controller is the cheapest around. The PS3 was originally packaged with the SIXAXIS controller, a variation of the classic DualShock which removed rumble in favour of basic motion-controls. What may have once seemed like a peripheral feature soon became a much sought-after inclusion. Fans wanted rumble.
Sony originally claimed they couldn’t include rumble as it would interfere with the SIXAXIS motion-controlling. This, of course, was PR cover-up rhetoric, owing to a dispute between Sony and a company claiming to have patented rumble.
Once the two companies had settled their differences, presumably via a briefcase stuffed with cash, Sony announced they’d solved the problem of rumble and motion-controlling, and had managed to pair the two features together. The SIXAXIS was retrofitted with rumble, re-named the DualShock, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The DualShock is a far superior controller to the SIXAXIS. The added weight of the rumble motors lend a sturdier feel to the controller, unlike the light, fragile-seeming SIXAXIS. Rumble is, surprisingly, a very important feature, as it offers some tangible feedback. The rattle of gunfire, the shake of a car's engine; it all matters. The motion-controls are still present, although they're so basic their inclusion in gameplay is often forgettable.
