PS3 Hits 80 Million Sales Milestone

Sony has announced that 80 million PS3s have been sold worldwide since launch, effectively bringing it level with the Xbox 360 despite releasing a year later.

The new figures, released by the publisher, are accurate as of November 2nd 2013, and make for fairly impressive reading. 4332 games are now apparently available for the platform worldwide (SKUs, mind, so several games are probably counted numerous times in different territories), not including 72,000 pieces of PSN content (games and DLC). There are now 150 million registered PSN accounts.

Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 shipped 80 million units worldwide last month, meaning that the gap between the two consoles is now practically negligible. We suspect that the PS3's greater breadth of exclusive titles over the last few years played a pivotal role.

I would have thought being a Bluray player would have helped bump the figures up. If I remember rightly it was the cheapest player on the market for wee while.

I reckon a good few sales of the super slim will be people who were looking for a George Foreman Grill and got confused.

Great news, in terms of who is in second place in current gen it probably is Sony, we do have to factor in the RROD into the 80 million Xbox 360's shipped (maybe 2 million, a rough conservative guess).

But the fact that the PSN now has over 150 million accounts is pretty mind blowing, the 360 I think has 48 million at the last count and Steam revealed that it has 65 million accounts now.
