Sony has informed two major British retailers that, starting today, PS4 pre-orders cannot be guaranteed to ship at launch.
As spotted by Eurogamer, Amazon and ShopTo have informed potential customers that pre-orders placed after August 6th (yesterday) may miss the holiday 2013 release date due to "high demand." "Please note – due to high demand, orders placed for the PlayStation 4 console from 6th August may be received after release date," reads a new statement from Amazon. "We will ship orders as soon as we receive sufficient inventory.”
"Sony have confirmed all PlayStation 4 pre-orders placed from 6th August will now not be guaranteed for launch," echoes ShopTo. "You can still pre-order PS4 with us in case we receive cancellations and can fulfil your order for launch.”
Creating buzz around limited stocks has always been a tried-and-true method of boosting sales, so it may be worth taking this with a pinch of salt. However, it's still a good sign for Sony's upcoming console. We've reached out to Sony for comment.
The PS4 still doesn't have a firm release date beyond "holiday 2013."
