Sony has announced that PS4 and Vita owners can take advantage of true cross-platform party chat.
Once again, Sony President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida confirmed this tidbit himself via the magic of twitter, responding to an inquisitive fan personally.

Neat. Though this will only really make sense for cross-platform multiplayer games, of which there'll be a few courtesy of independent studios, it's nice to see Sony finally going big on cross-game chat after all these years. It'll be free even if you don't have PS Plus, by the way.
Sony will doubtlessly look to aggressively market the PS Vita as a PS4 companion device once the new home console launches, which could well see a reversal of fortunes for the flagging handheld when combined with a retailer-led price cut.
