Little Mac is back, and he's still packing a punch! Sorry...had to. Punch-Out!! is a cartoony boxer with a lot of charm, some memorable characters and, as is so often the case with Nintendo games, a long history. Nearly everybody Little Mac meets on his way to the top will be someone you may have met before if you're a fan of the series. But we bet you've never seen them quite like this!
You can currently pick up a copy of Punch-Out!! for the Wii for just £14.95 from Zavvi at the moment, saving you a good couple of pounds on the nearest in-stock competitor over at Tesco.
Anyone who's played the boxing section of Wii Sports will know what's going on here. With Wiimote and Nunchuk in hand, it's your job to take Little Mac from the lowliest, scummiest garden shed to the glitziest arenas around, battling increasingly colourful characters along the way.
There are a whole host of glorious in-jokes here for long-term Ninty fanboys and the gameplay is both wonderfully simple, you can even play through the game using the classic controller layout too if you fancy more of a trip down memory lane. The cartoonish physicality on display is what makes this game, and whilst it's an absolute blast as a solitary experience, you'll really get the most out of it as a party game, be it staging tournaments with your mates or simply handing round the controllers and shouting backseat advice.
There's plenty of content here, and the power-ups add a surprising amount of depth to a game such as this. It just goes to show that a simple premise such as this doesn't have to result in one-dimensional mediocrity. Punch-Out!! is an absolute triumph of single-minded brilliance, and should be essential for any budding Wii developer let alone Wii owner.
